Sex and the open house

Find out about this underground open house transaction that is plaguing the real estate market place.

As I did my daily surf of the Internet for new and upcoming Real Estate news that I could share with you, I kept stumbling across references to House Humping. Now I was a little taken aback by the frequency of the references on the web but I could remember an episode of CSI were a couple discovered a murder had taken place in the house they had decided to have their tryst in.

House Humping is when a couple travels to an open house, and then when the Realtor is distracted they find an empty room or closet to have a quickie in.

In fact whole forums have been created for house humpers. Clubs have been created and the trends seem to gaining popularity. Unfortunately few humpers take the time to consider that high they get from the possibility of getting caught can carry some serious consequences.

If caught criminal charges could be placed. This act could also damage the possibility of a sale for the Realtor and could affect their ability to get paid. I know that listing a home and doing opens house is a major expense for a Realtor. Also the homeowner may be morally upstanding and take serious offence to the unsolicited sex act that took place in their home.

So if you find yourself in the position to have a quickie at an open house I sincerely hope that you will stay in your car. Because your privates, should remain private.

Well, I guess now I've heard everything!

I suppose the idea that one might get caught is exciting to some people, but it seems like such a disrespectful thing to do to have sex in a stranger's home. Just my opinion.

I know that I would personally be very upset to find a person defilling my closet. THanks.

Wow, I hadn't heard of this before. I do agree with you re: "your privates should remain private" -- definitely!

Thanks for the feedback. I strongly agree with stance and I look forward to continuing the discussions on the topic. What sort of behaviour do you feel is appropriate for an open house?

To look and don't touch. At one house viewing I opened a kitchen cupboard, nothing bad happened but my conscience told me I should've asked first.

Looking in closets and cupboards is a common practice. It can feel uncomfortable , however it is necessary to look under the sink to look for visible signs of mold. I also look in closets and cupboards for signs of vermin. Yes, rats, bugs and mice can all show up in a basic inspection in areas were food and clothing are stored. If the home owner is home, ask by all means, but never limit your inspection.

On a side note during some viewings I have stumbled across some peoples collections of erotica or comprimising outfits. These moments are awkward, but it doesn't change the fact that inspecting a home thouroughly is important.

Good points. Sorry it took me a while to get back here to read your note.

Finding erotica, intimate toys or lingerie are a common occurance. Especially when you preview a home that has yet to be listed for sale.

A personal experience that I had recently left me feeling dirty. I walked into the home and introduced myself, after a brief conversation we began to walk through the home. I first entered the lounge and beside the t.v. was a large box of erotic films; I tried to ignore them and we moved onto the next room. We came to the hall beneath the stairs in the basement and there was a large box of print material. Again I tried to act inconspicous and we continued our tour.

Finally on the second floor we got to the master bedroom, now the scatter of lingerie, and toys across the surface of the bed made me feel very uncomfortable.

I finished the tour and agreed that I would e-mail the appraisal to them. I was so uncomfortable with the experience however I wouldn't go back to the house. So I would like to extend my personal appreciation to everyone that keeps that sort of stuff out of sight when people are viewing your home.
